Electric Skateboard Rattling Noise — How to Find It and Fix It

A new rattling noise from your electric skateboard can be surprisingly unsettling.

You’re riding along, everything feels normal, and suddenly you hear:

Rattle. Rattle. Rattle.

Your first thought might be that something expensive has gone wrong inside the board.

Fortunately, that’s usually not the case.

A rattle that appears suddenly during a ride is often caused by something loose — a screw, bolt, washer, battery cover, motor mount, or another piece of hardware that has started moving around.

The trick is figuring out where the noise is actually coming from.

And that can be harder than it sounds.

The vibration from an electric skateboard travels through the deck, trucks, enclosure, and wheels. A loose screw at one end of the board can sometimes sound like it’s coming from somewhere completely different.

Here’s how I would go about finding it.

First: Don’t Ignore a New Rattle

While most skateboard rattles aren’t serious, you shouldn’t simply turn up your music and keep riding.

A loose component can eventually become a bigger problem.

A loose truck bolt can affect how the board handles and compromise safety. A loose motor mount can allow the belt to run incorrectly. A loose battery enclosure screw can allow the enclosure to move around and allow water to get inside. 

So if your board suddenly develops a noise that wasn’t there before, stop and investigate it.

The good news is that you probably don’t need to completely tear your skateboard apart.

Start with the simple stuff.

1. Check the Wheels First

This is one of the easiest places to start.

Grab each wheel and try to move it from side to side.

There shouldn’t be significant play.

Then spin each wheel by hand and listen carefully.

You’re looking for anything unusual:

  • A clicking sound
  • A grinding noise
  • Excessive side-to-side movement
  • A wheel that doesn’t spin freely
  • Something rubbing against the wheel
  • A loose wheel nut

If one wheel feels noticeably different from the others, you’ve probably found an important clue.

Check the wheel nuts

Make sure the wheel nuts are properly tightened.

Don’t just crank them down as hard as possible. They need to be secure, but the wheel still needs to rotate freely without binding.

If you’ve recently changed wheels, bearings, pulleys, or belts, this should be one of the first places you check.

2. Check the Trucks

Your trucks are another obvious source of rattling.

Look closely at the hardware holding the trucks to the deck.

Check each mounting bolt and nut.

You can also put a hand on the truck while gently moving it and see whether you can feel any unusual movement.

Pay particular attention if you’ve recently changed:

  • Bushings
  • Trucks
  • Risers
  • Baseplates
  • Mounting hardware

A tiny amount of looseness can create a surprisingly loud rattle once the board starts vibrating underneath you.

3. Check Every Screw You Can Easily Reach

This is where a lot of rattles come from.

Electric skateboards vibrate. A lot.

Over hundreds or thousands of kilometres, hardware can gradually loosen.

Go over the accessible screws and bolts on your board.

That includes things like:

  • Truck mounting hardware
  • Motor mount hardware
  • Enclosure screws
  • Battery enclosure screws
  • ESC enclosure screws
  • Covers
  • Charging-port covers
  • Handles or accessories
  • Any aftermarket components you’ve installed

Don’t assume that because a screw is still in place, it’s tight.

A screw that’s backed out slightly can remain in its hole while still rattling every time you hit a crack or bump.

A Personal Lesson: When a Single Bolt Ruined the Ride

I learned this the hard way on my Ownboard Zeus.

The motor bash guard kept coming loose and would start rattling every time I rode. At first, I’d just stop, tighten it up, and think I had solved the problem.

But about half an hour into the next ride, the rattling would come back again.

It became incredibly frustrating — it felt like no matter how many times I tightened it, it just wouldn’t stay put.

After talking with other eskaters, I was advised to use Loctite on the bolts.

Once I did that, the problem improved dramatically. The guard finally stayed tight, and the constant mid-ride rattling stopped.

It was a simple fix, but it taught me an important lesson: some vibrations need more than just tightening — they need proper thread retention.

4. Check the Motor Mounts

If your board uses belt-driven motors, take a close look at the motor mounts.

The motor mount is subjected to a lot of vibration and mechanical stress.

Look for:

  • Loose mounting bolts
  • Movement between the motor mount and truck
  • Cracked hardware
  • A motor that appears to move when you gently push on it
  • Anything contacting the wheel or pulley

If you recently replaced a belt, this is particularly worth checking.

I’ve learned that lesson myself.

After putting thousands of kilometres on an electric skateboard, you start to realize that the small pieces of hardware deserve just as much attention as the big expensive components.

5. Inspect the Belt and Pulleys

A rattling noise can sometimes be related to the drivetrain rather than loose hardware.

With the board powered off, inspect the belt and pulley area.

Look for anything unusual:

  • Damaged belt teeth
  • A loose pulley
  • A pulley that moves independently when it shouldn’t
  • Debris caught around the belt
  • Something rubbing against the belt
  • Excessive belt movement

If your belt has recently been replaced, double-check that everything was installed correctly.

And if the rattle changes with motor speed, that’s another clue that the drivetrain deserves closer inspection.

6. Listen to the Board With the Power Off

Here’s a simple test that can tell you a lot.

Turn the board off.

Then gently shake it.

Don’t throw it around. Just give it a few controlled movements while listening carefully.

Do you hear the same rattle?

If you do, that’s useful information.

It suggests you’re probably dealing with something physical that is loose or moving around rather than an electronic problem.

You can also gently tap different areas of the enclosure and deck with your hand.

Listen for anything that sounds different from the surrounding areas.

7. Check the Enclosures

The battery and electronics enclosures are another place I’d investigate.

Depending on the board, there may be screws holding an enclosure directly to the underside of the deck.

Check that the enclosure isn’t moving.

Put your hand against it and gently try to move it.

It shouldn’t be rattling around underneath the board.

8. Don’t Forget the Deck

Sometimes the noise isn’t coming from a mechanical component at all.

It could be something attached to the deck.

Check for:

  • Loose grip tape
  • Loose covers
  • Loose cable clips
  • Accessories
  • Mounting brackets
  • Reflectors
  • Lights
  • Cameras
  • Phone mounts
  • Anything you’ve added yourself

I’ve found that aftermarket accessories can sometimes be the culprit.

Something that feels completely solid when you’re standing still can start vibrating like crazy once you’re travelling at 25 or 30 km/h.

9. Recreate the Rattle Without Riding

Once you’ve narrowed down the area, try to reproduce the noise while the board is stationary.

For example, if you think it’s coming from the front of the board, gently move or tap that area.

If you think it’s coming from the rear, investigate the motor, wheels, pulleys, and truck.

The goal isn’t to violently shake the board until something falls off.

You’re trying to isolate the source.

Think of it like troubleshooting a strange noise in a car.

You don’t start replacing the engine.

You first figure out where the noise is actually coming from.

10. Tighten the Hardware — But Don’t Overdo It

Once you’ve found the culprit, the solution may be as simple as tightening the hardware.

But there’s an important distinction:

Tight doesn’t mean as tight as humanly possible.

Over-tightening can damage threads, crush components, strip screws, or damage the deck.

Use the appropriate tool and tighten the hardware properly.

If the manufacturer provides torque specifications, follow them.

And if a screw repeatedly works itself loose, don’t just keep tightening it harder.

There’s probably a reason it’s happening.

You may need to investigate the threads, hardware, vibration, or use an appropriate threadlocker such as loctite, as per my story above. 

What If the Rattle Doesn’t Go Away?

If you’ve checked the obvious hardware and the rattle is still there, start paying attention to when the noise occurs.

That can give you another major clue.

Does it happen only when you’re moving?

That points toward something being affected by vibration or rotation.

Does it change with speed?

That could point toward a wheel, bearing, belt, pulley, or motor-related issue.

Does it happen when you hit bumps?

That makes loose hardware particularly suspicious.

Does it happen when you accelerate?

Pay closer attention to the drivetrain and motor mounts.

Does it happen when you brake?

That’s another reason to inspect the drivetrain and mounting hardware carefully.

Does it happen even when the board is sitting still?

That makes a loose physical component more likely than something related to the motors.

The noise itself is giving you information.

You just have to listen to it.

One of the Best Troubleshooting Tricks: Change One Thing at a Time

This is something that can save you a lot of frustration.

Don’t take half the skateboard apart and then try to figure out what fixed the problem.

Start with the easiest possibility.

Check the wheel.

Then the truck.

Then the mounting hardware.

Then the motor mount.

Then the belt and pulley.

Then the enclosure and accessories.

Work systematically.

If you change five things at once, you might fix the problem — but you won’t necessarily know what caused it.

And the next time the rattle appears, you’ll be back at square one.

When a Rattle Could Be Something More Serious

Most rattles are not catastrophic.

But there are situations where I’d stop riding until you’ve figured things out.

Pay attention if the rattle is accompanied by:

  • Grinding
  • Significant wheel play
  • A wheel that isn’t spinning properly
  • A loose truck
  • A motor that moves excessively
  • A damaged belt
  • Cracked hardware
  • A burning smell
  • Unusual heat
  • Battery swelling
  • Electrical problems
  • Sudden changes in braking or acceleration

At that point, don’t assume it’s “just a rattle.”

Something else may be going on.

My Approach to Electric Skateboard Noises

After spending a lot of time riding and maintaining electric skateboards, I’ve become much less worried about strange noises than I used to be.

Not because noises don’t matter.

They do.

But because I’ve learned that the first thing to do is stop imagining the worst and start looking for evidence.

A strange sound doesn’t automatically mean your ESC is dying.

It doesn’t automatically mean your motors are finished.

And it certainly doesn’t mean you need a new skateboard.

Sometimes it’s a $2 screw that’s decided it doesn’t want to stay where you put it.

The important thing is to find out which one.

The Bottom Line

If your electric skateboard suddenly develops a rattling noise, don’t panic.

Stop riding and start with the simple stuff.

Check the wheels. Check the truck hardware. Check the motor mounts. Check the belts and pulleys. Check the enclosure screws. Check anything you’ve recently installed or worked on.

Most importantly, don’t ignore a new noise just because the board still rides normally.

A small loose component is easy to fix when you catch it early.

Leave it alone for another few hundred kilometres, and that little rattle could turn into a much bigger repair.

Your skateboard is telling you something.

The trick is learning how to listen.
